My thoughts about The Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remastered

My Story with The Elder Scroll Oblivion

I bought the game while I was still in school. Oblivion was the game which was part of my Xbox 360 Elite bundle. I bought the console in a tech store nearby and went to a friend of mine to start playing. We played the game with the German translation, which was really funny because there where so many translation issues. It was a wild mix of English and German in a lot of pop-up boxes. They sometimes changed from sentence to sentence or even word to word. It made it hard to progress the game as I wasn’t that good reading the English text parts back than.

This is made us stop playing as it was too hard to proceed with all the translation issues and bugs the contained In the game.

I might should mention that the console was not connected to the internet, as we tried that. This did prevent us from downloading any patches leaving us with the version stored on the disc.

I gave the game another try when, I got home but I did not understand it and it felt like it was too difficult for me. So I stopped playing it and borrowed it another friend of mine. He started playing and told me how awesome the game was and that I really should give it another try as well. He also told me that it was to hard for him but the fund a glitch allowing him to duplicate items and he used it to get health potions. He showed me the glitch and we had a lot of fun letting melons roll down some hills.

As he finished his playthrough I took back my game and started playing it myself. I do not know how many hours I put into the game but I completed it with both DLC’s and I had a great time. I decorated a house in one of the cities, bought some civil cloths I liked and “lived” in the city going on adventures from time to time.

Oblivion Remstasterd

The release of the game surprised me. Sure I heard some rumors about it but was sure that nothing will happen. I was not able to watch the release stream live as life got in the way but that was fine. When I got the information that it was released, I decided to get it via the Xbox GamePass for now. I plan to buy the game later to support Bethesda for the great work they put into this. To be clear I do know that they did outsource this project so the compliment also goes to that company.

So I downloaded the game while being at work and started the game as I got some spare time. The menu showed up, the theme music started and I got some goosebumps and a lot of memory flooded my brain from previous game sessions with the legacy version. I made a quick plan what I did want to play and decided to create the all classy archer battle mage. So I created my character and was greeted by the prison and there friendly inhabitants.

My first impression was that the game does indeed look Beautiful and I instantly did feel at home. I did the tutorial and stepped into the world. As I remembered that the main quest was a pain if you did keep it waiting I did start with that. After solving the Kvatch quest I did focus on the mage guild to get my build into the right direction. I never did like the quests to join the mage guild in Oblivion, sure the quests aren’t bad and it does feel immersive but something is missing to make it interesting.

I did continue to make some mage guild quests, did the arena while leveling up. As soon as I reached the Arcane University I started to create my own spells to level much faster. Somehow by accident I stumbled into the “Knights of the Nine” DLC and played through the whole story line.

I did some Oblivion gates but I did want to wait until stronger items to spawn so leveling was my way to go.

Sadly after some time the game did feel like a huge grind to me as most stories are already known to me from playing it as a child. Most dungeons or caves are really repetitive, I didn’t notice the building blocks as I was younger but they are very noticeable to me now.

Somehow I got distracted by The Elder Scrolls Online and spend a lot of time in that game instead. I do want to go back to Oblivion to complete at least the main story and play through the awesome “Shivering Isle” DLC. As I wrote down my experience I noticed that this DLC is one of the main reasons I did want to play it once more, just to see how this alien like world does look and feel with some modern graphic. Sadly I got distracted for now …

My thoughts about the game itself

As there was no update of the game for me most issues could be resolved as you read that post.

The remaster does stick to the legacy version really good, the new graphic is stunning even with the FPS drops currently. The crashes are annoying but they are not that frequent, at least that’s the case for my playthrough.

I think the game is worth the money asked for and is truly something you should experience, at least if you do like old school RPG’s.
